Link building

Link building: Doing it Right

Quality, not quantity, is the secret to link building. If other sites give you a link, Google sees you as relevant and worth giving visibility. The more links you can get to your website should be your goal. But aim at linking to sites whose niche matches yours. Recently, webmasters have had to change their approach to their link strategy. After updates to Google’s Panda and Penguin algorithms, many websites dropped overnight in the search results. These were the ones that had focused on quantity of backlinks, rather than quality. One good link from a relevant site of authority is worth 10 to 100 times the SEO value from scores of irrelevant sites. Google’s wants link building to happen honestly and steadily. Is your website already in Google’s top 30 of Google for a particular keyword but you’d like to see it in the top 10 results? With our Keyboost tool you can. How to use backlinks most effectively in your page content

You indicate the links on your site to visitors with anchor text (the clickable words). But did you know how important the words you choose are for link building? Your anchor text determines how Google assesses the link. Using anchor text words identical to the keyword for which the landing page is optimized has a powerful SEO value. But don’t over-use the exact phrase. When many of a site’s inbound links have the same anchor text, Google questions if the links were gained honestly through link building. That said, it remains best practice to use your target keywords in your anchor text when relevant. But it’s best to vary the word and phrases around them.

Anchor text tips for your back linking strategy

  1. Branded anchor text uses the name of your brand, company or product. This could be ‘Nike running shoes’ or ‘Brown Organic Food Company’. The relevance is high because the chances are that the content of your website is about your brand and your products.

  2. Naked link anchor text forms the simplest and most natural links to a website. This is when you use the full url of the link such as ‘www.seopageoptimizer.uk’.

  3. Generic anchor text gives an instruction such as ‘Click here’ or ‘Read more’ to link out. These are a wasted SEO opportunity for keyword use. It’s better to say: ‘Click here for Nike running shoes’ or ‘Read more about Brown Organic Food Company’s vitamin range’.

  4. Related keyword anchor text includes similar words or synonyms to the keyword. Say your target keyword is ‘vitamin products for arthritis’, you might use ‘supplements for rheumatic problems’ or ‘vitamins for joint pain’.

  5. Anchor text with a partial keyword match weaves in the keyword. If your target phrase is ‘vitamin products for arthritis’, your anchor text might be ‘how to use vitamin products for arthritis’ or ‘best sources of vitamin products for arthritis’.

  6. Combination anchor text combines brand anchor text with anchor text with your exact keyword text and anchor text with a partial keyword match. But again use them sparingly. It’s better not put your keyword in every single backlink.

  1. Image links: You don’t have to use text as your anchor links. You can link out from an image. But search engines can’t ‘see’ photos and illustrations as humans do. So for each image, it’s good practice to add alt-text (short for alternative text). By writing clear alt text, you ensure your link is readable by search engines and get an opportunity to add SEO keywords. So always optimize alt-text.
  2. Internal links: Internal links take your visitors to another page on your website and allow them to navigate. They’re also used by search engine crawlers to map your site. Think of them as pathways. Internal links don’t have much value for search results. But the anchor text for internal links is still important to optimize as it allows you to use your keywords.

Earned link building for your website

Earning links should be the cornerstone of your link building strategy. Post unique and valuable text on your website, such a great white paper or blog content. Make it so interesting that it convinces other website owners to link to your website so their visitors can benefit too. The more relevant and valuable your content, the greater the chance of this happening. Research relevant topics to structure your keyword-optimised content around. Then syndicate content on major industry websites or write a unique guest blog post. Link building is increasingly about sharing information to build up social proof, via social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+. Spending time growing yourself as a convincing brand will help your link building as you earn the type of links that are most powerful for your SEO profile. For your link building strategy, earn links by publishing high-quality content. Transform your company into a strong brand. You’ll automatically attract additional visitors.

How not to go about building links

With Google’s latest algorithm updates, link building has become more complex. Some strategies that people used to use to build links are now not only unsuccessful. Today, they’re downright dangerous and will earn penalties from Google. Do not buy from link farms is our advice. If a SEO company offers you a package link building deal that guarantees a certain number of backlinks, beware. This is link farming. Chances are you’ll end up with links from sites with little relevance. Google will eventually realize this and may penalize you. Be careful of reciprocal links too if they’re not natural. These happen naturally if you share a topic area with another website. Providing you’re not linking purely to boost your search engine visibility, reciprocal links are good thing. Just remember there has to be a genuine relevance. Not sure what to do to organize your strategy to building each link ? Try out Keyboost to build up valuable external links to sites of relevance and trust and find out for yourself that it works. The use of no-follow links

The no-follow link is a way website owners inform search engines not to count links as positive votes or an endorsement. Comments on blogs or forums, for example, are usually given a no-follow link. Doing so can help blog owners avoid problems with search engines and spam. But don’t dismiss them. Even a no-follow link is worth getting as it increases your brand’s visibility and carries more traffic to your site.
